Grocery Shopping

This is a look around a normal supermarket.

Always get the fish that are... swimming :)

Fish head is a delicacy here.

Steamed bread.  Manto.
Free samples.  Fish balls.

The milk aisle.  They come in  boxes (that are full of little bags.)
More milk
Sausages. Their consistency is sort of like spam.  My little man loves them as do most  kids and young people here.
That's part of our foreign food and cereal isle.  5 varieties.  We stick with toast:)
Our pasta aisle / foreign food section.

Fresh noodles
Soy milk
Oil!
More noodles!
Soy sauce:)
And MORE soy sauce
RICE!
Some spices
The man who gives everyone their eggs.  You tell him how many you want and he puts them in a bag for you.

I love watching the people, walking through the fish and produce aisle and just enjoying some of the differences in supermarket shopping.

Some small differences...

  • We don't have a dairy aisle.  I often can't find butter at the supermarket (so I buy it online).  Cheese, cream, margarine, etc are non-existent.  They do have yogurt though!
  • There aren't any frozen pizzas, chicken nuggets, instant meals, (apart from instant noodles and frozen dumplings) etc. over here.
  • No cake / brownie mixes (scratch is the way to go!).  Store bought cookies are a hit and miss (vegetable flavor ones are common).  Homemade is the best way:)
  • Ground beef is rare.  Sometimes they will grind it for me.  People over here mostly eat pork or chicken.
  • People shop to buy things for a day or two.  They buy things fresh and use them fast.  Rarely do people fill up a shopping cart with stuff.
  • Convenience is not as important as choosing what's fresh and showing love through cooking.  (ex. they don't do tinned veggies, beans, tomatoes, etc.)
  • It's hard to buy things at the store to just "have on hand" since that's not a concept from around here.
  • There are no Buzz light year tooth brushes, Peppa Pig yogurts or other cool stuff like that:) haha.
  • It's interesting to go grocery shopping and see the variety in culture and thoughts.  Chinese food has so much flavor, styles and dishes.  My little men eat rice probably at least once a day:)

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for sharing! I like that they dont eat so much dairy. I think it is actually kinda cool that they eat so fresh. that's nice. the fresh fish is pretty cool, but does everyone know how to bone a fish!? cause that would overwhelm me... or maybe not...
